Gardening in the Texas Hill Country

   HCMG Projects

Boys and Girls Club of Bandera County Garden Project

Behind a big blue commercial-looking building that presently houses the Bandera Teen Center is a breath of fresh air and a spark of sunshine the Bandera Boys and Girls Club Garden.

     In the beginning . . .

At the garden, HCMGs from the Bandera area partner with Schreiner Nursing School students to teach principles of gardening soil composition, composting, rain water harvesting and plant cycles.

    . . . and today

Depending on the season, second through fifth graders are greeted each Thursday by giant sunflowers, bright red tomatoes or their favorite  butterflies, bugs or worms.  Sue Hall, Project Chair, says the boys and girls develop an appreciation of the environment as well as have fun whether building a scare crow, seeing a watermelon grow or harvesting produce.
Two additional features will be added the spring of 2015: a butterfly/pollinator way station and a mini orchard. With Hill Country Master Gardeners' help, gardening is influencing young lives and providing nutrition in Bandera County.
