I thought I would send a brief note to the Hill Country
Master Gardeners to update everyone. Again, I really
appreciate the Hill Country Master Gardeners' support
throughout my undergraduate education.
Last summer, I worked at Ball Horticultural located west of
Chicago. While an
intern, I worked primarily on impatiens and had the
opportunity to shadow one of the company's primary
ornamental plant breeders.
This past May, I completed my degree in horticulture and graduated
from Texas
A&M University. As a result of my internship and continued
work with daylilies, I decided to pursue plant breeding as
a career. I will be continuing my education and intend to
complete a PhD. I spent this weekend in Madison, Wisconsin
interviewing for a potential assistantship position. I
should learn about their final decision within the next
week or two.
Since I graduated in May, I have been spending the majority of my
time working with my daylilies, making crosses, taking
notes, planting my newest seedlings, and selecting/digging
selected seedlings for possible future introduction. I am
attaching photos of a few of them. The near white (below,
right) is pictured flowering in mid July; it continued to
flower into
August despite the extreme heat.
Thanks again,
