We share our ten acres with
lots of deer so I garden with
that in mind.
The vegetable garden is the only area we have fenced so I am
happy when I find something the deer don't like.
— June, HCMG
The deer don't like
the sage or Copper Canyon
Daisy . . . .or the bluebonnets
that came up
volunteer in the granite
pathway.
We enjoy watching the
wildlife —
especially the babies . . .
. . .and as much as we like the wildlife, we like our
deer-fenced vegetable garden.
We started with this fenced area and
have enjoyed
the fruits —
uh, vegetables —
of our labors throughout
the seasons.
Bluebonnets in the fall
almost took over the garden, but the garden kept producing right
on through the winter.
Then came the drought
that began in late 2010 and is continuing through 2011. The
wildlife, of course, are hungrier than ever, and the deer discovered they could jump the fence. They ate everything from
veggies to bluebonnets! So the
fence that had been successful for several seasons came down.
The garden was enlarged, segregated beds installed, and an
8-foot game fence was erected! Now, we are waiting on rainfall
and cooler weather for an invitation to plant fall veggies!
