A Riverside Landscape
Make-Over |
|
|
|

Just getting started . .
.
. . . and what a
difference!
|
|
This remodel and
landscaping project has
been on-going from the
time we moved in. One of
the first projects was
to add covered decks to
cool the home during the
long, hot summer
afternoons. Beds were
constructed at the base
of the decks and planted
with Salvia leucantha,
Mexican Bush Sage, which
can withstand the heat
and requires minimum
water.
|
|
 |
|
Replacing the chainlink
fence was the next major
project. Stonemasons
were hired to build the
native limestone rock
walls. I built the large
cedar gate and the
smaller replica at the
side yard. |

 |
|
The third phase is one I
am most excited about —
a quarter-acre
wildflower field. |

When the County
excavated Ingram Lake, I
hauled in truckloads of
bottom river silt.
|
Lots of horse manure and
21-0-0 fertilizer were
mixed in with the silt.
Wildflower seeds were
purchased from Wildseed
Farms in Fredericksburg,
and with the good rains
that came in October, I
am hoping for a
spectacular first
wildflower display.
Timing is everything!
Future projects include
installing two
5,000-gallon rainwater
storage tanks and a
unique greenhouse that
will look like something
from a "Harry Potter" or
"Lord of the Rings"
movie. Plans for the
front of the house
include 2' x 2' x 4'
limestone blocks, a
brick driveway, a water
collection aqueduct and
crepe myrtles. |
