 Horticulture Scholarship

                                Meet Chris von Kohn
2009/2010 Recipient of the HCMG Scholarship Award

Chris says he first became interested in horticulture at a very young age. "When I was 8 years old, I bought my first orchid. Since that time, my collection has expanded to over 200 species." Four years ago, Kris became interested in daylilies — specifically hybridizing daylilies.
Now a junior at Texas A & M University pursuing a horticulture degree, Chris currently is working on a daylily breeding research project and developing a literature review on the subject. Chris was introduced to HCMG members at the August meeting, and he presented a PowerPoint program about Hybridizing Daylilies.    See Chris' slide show

Horticulture Scholarship Award

Breaking News!  Our rain barrel and plant sales projects have been so successful that beginning with the fall semester of 2010, HCMG will be offering scholarships for two students per semester.

Our foremost project is the scholarship award. Hill Country Master Gardeners awards $1,000 financial assistance per semester to TWO students pursuing a degree in Horticulture Science at one of the four state universities. The four schools offering this degree are Texas A&M at College Station, Texas Tech, Tarleton State, and Stephen F. Austin University

Awarding annual scholarships totaling $4,000 for studies in horticulture is no small commitment. Hosting the 2007 State Master Gardeners Conference provided the seed for our scholarship program, and as all good gardeners know, this early stage in the gardening process requires planning and thoughtful care. So funds were invested, and Hill Country Master Gardeners set about growing the program. And, grow we have!

   ►
Applicants must be full time students (12 hours per semester undergraduate or 9 hours per semester graduate student) in the third year of horticulture studies with a 3.0 grade average.

   ►
Applications are available through the academic advisors at each university who in turn recommend potential recipients to the Hill Country Master Gardeners Scholarship Committee.

   ►
Potential recipients are interviewed by the HCMG Committee, and the winner is announced in early August.
